Office Update Fails (Office 2000)

I have Windows XP SP2 and Office 2000. All software is legitimate and I
have all the CD-ROMs with serial codes.

When I launch Office Update, the progress bar reaches 84% and then it gives
me a message that Office Update is unable to check for updates.

I have a standalone PC, so it is not a matter of having administrative
privileges. I have always been able to run Office Update in the past.

What can I do to fix the problem?
