Office Update failure

Doug Charlton

I religiously update both Windows XP Professional and
Office XP developer religiously at least once a week.
This issue hit me 2 to 4 weeks ago.

If anyone should find a solution to this problem please
let me know also. With all of the discussion regarding
this specific issue it would seem as though MS is
somewhat insensitive to the issue or enjoying the
increased revenue of($35) a pop some of our peers are
most likely shelling out. If security is of utmost
priority why is such a disabling problem still an issue?

I have a similar problem with Office XP Professional and
Windows ME. The Office update used to work, but about a
month ago got stuck at 40%, and that is all I get now. I
tried deleting the Office Update Installation Engine in
IE6, but this has made no difference, still gets to 40%
and sticks. Oh, and I do not use AOL, which Microsoft said
might be the problem.

The following solution is scary, but works:

Follow the steps in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -
812490 (which is written for Plus!)

In the Registry Key path, locate the key that applies to
the office version or disk you are having problems with
and delete that Key. You can find the right key by
selecting each folder in order and look for the "Product
Name" in the right pane.

Once you've deleted the key the program will no longer be
listed in the Add/Remove Programs.

Reinstall the program (so it is listed), then run update
again.

Since you're messing around with Registry Editor, I
highly suggest backing up the registry before doing
anything.
