Office Update for XP fails

I have used system restore on my computer and now I cannot get office XP
updates on my home desktop. The message (see below) that pops up when office
updates fail to occur is the only one that I think may be responsible.
However, I have NO idea what files are missing. I also cannot use the CD to
reinstall office XP because I get a message that the patch is missing. I'm
clueless here.

"Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance."

Thanks in advance.

Hi Susan:

I understand the "concept" of fixing this problem, but I'm unable to execute
it, being a novice. Is there any other way to fix this that doesn't involved
installing the program and adding patches, etc.?

I understand, but there's not really an easier fix than what Microsoft has
documented for this problem.

It may be best if you find a local computer person who is comfortable going
through the steps in that article to re-apply patches and restore your
system to its functioning status.
