Office Update is unable to check for updates

When trying to perform, an office update always get the above message,
followed by the statements that (1) I don't have administrative properties
for my cmptr or (2) there's a network problem or (3) Winows Installer patch
files are missing or finally (4) that I installed updates in the past the
upgraded the Windows Installer version 1.0 to version 1.1.

I have Office XP and it is the only version I've ever had. Did install the
Windows Service Pack XP2 but think I had the problem before then.

Any help
