Office Update is unable to check for updates?

Lea

When I try to check for updates I get to a page with the following:

Title: Office Update is unable to check for updates

Sugested reasons are:

1) I do not have admin. privalages, but I do.
2) There is a network problem. All the other PCs on the network updated fine.
3) Some patch files (.MSP) are missing. I don't belive the PC has been
updates (well office). The link to sort this problem if it exists is broken
so I can't work out if this is a problem.
4) The updater has been updated from V1.0 to V1.1. Again seems unlikely as
I had to install the update detection tool when I started the update process.
I did follow the links and downloded the latest version (V2.0) and was
tolled it had been installed.

any help gratefully received.

PS - I am trying to update Office XP Professional V2002

Hi, Lea,

This is a commonly answered post in this forum. Quite often one of the
following will help:

The update process starts and then unexpectedly quits after you click "Check
for Updates" on the Office Update Web site:

PRB: Windows System Restore Does Not Monitor Windows Installer Patch (.msp)

I've been having the exact same problem trying to update Office XP Standard. I've tried the links above and done everything they say (short of reinstallation) and nothing has worked. I don't know what to do next because I don't want to reinstall if I don't absolutely have to.

Did you even try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility?

I tried the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility but it didn't work at first.
In fact, I tried every little thing in all the links above, finally even
uninstalling Office and reinstalling, but that didn't work either the first
time. What I did that finally worked is--I uninstalled Office the second
time and everything connected with it (Media Content, which took forever;
uninstalled all updates on the Add/Remove--probably even Windows updates, but
I knew I could get them back on the Win Updates). THEN I used the Win
Installer Cleanup Utility again, checking only on Office. I reloaded Office,
re-registered, and the Office updates worked without a hitch. I have Office
XP on Win98SE, but this same problem seems to affect just about any of the
Office programs. Be sure and back up your Outlook contacts/address book
before you uninstall Office or you'll lose them, then you can just import
your information back in, but all your documents saved from Word will survive
just fine. Hope this helps some frustrated souls. In the end, it was easier
than to keep searching and trying everything I came across to try.
