Office Update not working!

B

Buckeye Steve

I have been attempting for over a week to use the Office Update page to check
for any updates for my Office 2007 Professional Suite. This is the screen
that is displayed:

The Office Update Catalog cannot be displayed

The Office Update site is currently experiencing some technical difficulties
and is unable to check for updates.

Click the Try Again link below to try loading the site again (do not use the
Refresh button on your browser to reload the site).

If problems persist, please contact Microsoft Support for assistance. You
can also search for Office updates in the Download Catalog.

Been There..... Done all of that but no luck. Is there a problem with (dare
I say it?) Microsoft's web link?

I am checking from the Office website, which is:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx
and then I click on Office Updates..... I was successful in downloading and
installing SP1 for 2007 but nothing since.

I just did a Windows Update on my system. One optional file - works for me.
Is this the way you're checking for updates?

As a followup I just installed Visio 2007 on my laptop and went in thru
Microsoft.com and checked for Office updates. I had no updates and it seemed
to work fine. No error messages, etc. Is there a reason you think you;re
missing some updates?

I am experiencing the exact same problem described above, from three
different PCs all on one local network. It has always worked in the past
although it has not for about the past week.

Windows Update works properly and the PCs are current. Office Update does
not. It gets to about the 40% point of checking for what is needed and then
goes to the screen with the message about technical difficulties.

For the record, I run Windows XP Pro SP2 and Office 2003.

B

Buckeye Steve

That is exactly what I have been trying to explain here (it gets to about
40%, and then I get the message that Office Update is "temporarily" having a
problem and to try later..... Office 2007 on Windows XP Professional SP3.

I have now also exactly the same problems here (Italy), using the Office
Update Italian site.
I am running Windows XP sp2 (ita) and Office 2003 sp3s (ita) and I had never
had similar behaviour in past.
Microsoft Update works fine instead.

Maybe, just maybe, someone at Microsoft will read these posts and FINALLY
realize that they have a serious problem with that site............ yeah
right!

A follow-up note. I have tried these troublshooting steps and they have not
fixed the problem:

Step 1: Repair Office Windows Installer sub keys

=========

1. Please visit following website to download a tool, which can check and
repair Office Windows Installer sub keys.

http://www.sbor.com/Docs/OUCPR.exe

2. Please unzip the file to the Desktop. We will receive a file named
OUCPR.exe

3. Double click the file OUCPR.exe.

4. If there are any problematic products found, click Unregister to repair.

If this does not fix the problem, then move onto the next step.

Step 2: Make sure that Windows Installer service is set to Enabled

=========

1. Click Start, click Run, type "services.msc" (without the quotation
marks), and then click "OK".

2. In the list of services, double-click "Windows Installer".

3. View the option that appears in the "Startup type" list.

4. If the start type is set to "DISABLED", modify the startup type to a
setting of "Manual". To do this, right-click "DISABLED" list, click
Properties, General tab. And then select "Manual" in the "Startup type" list,
and then click "OK".

How is the result? If the error message is still received, please go to
Step 3.

Step 3: Repair the Windows Installer

=========

1. Quit all programs that are running in the background.

2. Press Start and choose Run.

2. Type in "cmd" (without quotation marks) and press OK.

3. In the command line, type in the following command and press Enter:

MSIexec /unregister

4. Then, type in the following command and press Enter:

MSIexec /regserver

After finishing the above steps, please check the result again. If the
issue persists, please click Start, click Control Panel, and click Add/Remove
Programs to check if Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed. If it has,
please highlight and remove it. After that, please reinstall Windows
Installer 3.1 from the following link.

Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en

5. Restart your computer and then test the issue again.

Two answers, based on two different PCs:

1. On one PC that was experiencing the Update problem: A Microsoft technical
support agent I contacted via email suggested following the troubleshooting
steps in this knowledge base article: 304498 "How to troubleshoot failures
updating your Office installation from the Office Update Web site". The first
step involves clearing IE cache, history, etc. and the user TEMP folder.
After doing this I connected to Office Update and the Update worked properly.

2. On a second PC: Before doing the IE step from the above-mentioned article
I just tried connecting to Office Update. It worked normally. That's right -
not working before, working properly now.

So I suggest first, re-try and see if still not working. If not, look up the
article and try its steps.

Pete,

I had to go all the way through Method 4 to get it repaired, but it WORKED!
Thanks for the help!
