Office update problem with Outlook editor

I just updated my Office 2003 and now I cannot use Word as my email editor.
A window comes up that says "starting Word as email editor" and office hangs.

Thanks for the quick reply but where do I find Detect and Repair? Also,
this upgrade destroyed my ability to use hyperlinks so I had to forward the
automatic email response to my wife's computer to read it!!

Too bad it didn't last! Today I am back with Outlook unable to start Word as
my editor as I tried to forward a message in HTML and hyperlinks have failed
also. I ran detect and repair and it still doesn't work. I had to remove
Word as the editor to make the Outlook work again but still cannot get
hyperlinks to work. For example, I cannot read today's NY TImes because I
cannot link for the email to the articles.

I found it on my install disk, ran it and everything seems to be working now.

Did anyone get back to you on this problem. I am experiencing the same
problem. I have reinstalled Outlook and Word & rebuilt my profile. This did
not remedy the problem. I still cannot use Microsoft Word as my e-mail
editor without it freezing or crashing.

Nothing yet. I also had my machine re-imaged & had to reload all software,
but to no avail. Still cannot sure MS Word as my editor. I had been using
MS Word for the past 8 years and then one day in March is just started
hanging-up on Outlook.

Today I have had the exact same thing happen as Kat described. I have
rebooted, detect and repair, reinstall, system restore to a day I know it was
working. No explanation or resolution whatsoever. I can send plain text after
removing Word as my editor. And like Bpilot, I can't access hyperlinks. I am

I am having the same issue with several users (three so far out of 125).
Fully updated and repaired and Outlook still hangs. Task Manager shows
WINWORD.exe using 98-100% of the processor.

I'm now a member of this club.

I ran detect and repair with no result. I've had to stop using MS Word
as my email editor and it's a huge nuisance not to have it.

Hope someone comes up with an idea soon.

No, these are peer-to-peer news groups. The occasional MSFT employee may drop by for a looksee but they do not monitor the groups.

Our problem was a corrupted default Word template. After restoring the
template from a backup the problem was resolved.
