Office Update Requires ActiveX Control Installation

I have just started to work work with a new laptop (WXP) that has Office 2003
loaded. I'm going around to update the system and find that Office 2003
requires that I first load an ActiveX control. I am assuming that this
control is to assist download activity, but in the past, ActiveX was also a
possible source of problems. Have thesse 'problems' been eliminated, or
should I just stay away from it (and possible upgrades to my Office suite)?

Hi PeeDee,

There are useful and malicious ActiveX controls (as well as other things in life <g>). To use the MS Update and Officeupdate
automatic updating services you do need to load and run the Controls that those sites rely on. You can still manually download the
updates from http://office.microsoft.com/downloads and if you sign up for the MS/Office newsletters you can use that as the
'notification' when there are new updates to get.
