Office Update Scan won't work - Office XP Professional 2002

When I try to run the Office update scan, it quits and I
get the following message:

Install the Office Update Installation Engine Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on
this computer. This may be happening because of one of the
following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this
computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used
by the Office Update site failed to download. Go back to

Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously
applied Office updates are missing from the

files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced

will not be able to apply Office updates. You may also be
unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the
same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support

I should have mentioned that when I download a patch
manually, I cannot install it. I get an error. I can find
the updates, but I can't install them.

One of the steps in the KB article at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304498 will usually
resolve this problem. Yes, the same corruption that breaks the Office
Update detection also breaks any Office Setup operation. Did you recently
perform a Windows System Restore? Doing that will corrupt the Windows
Installer registry settings for Office. This bug is fixed in Windows
Installer 3.0 (included in Windows XP SP2 if you're using that version of
Windows).

Sloan,
I performed each of the steps in article 304498, and it
still will not allow me to update or to run the "detect&
Repair" utility in any of the Office products.

I installed Service pack 2 yesterday, and still no luck.

I do have a sneaking suspicion that use of the "Restore"
function has created or contributed to this problem. A few
months ago I was forced to use restore shortly after I had
updated Microsoft Office, and I think I had restored to a
point prior to the office update.

What are my options now? Would an uninstal/re-install of
Office fix the problem? Is there anything in the error log
that can help pinpoint what is causing the problem?

Thanks for your help.

I had the same problem some months ago. I received instructions from one of
the MS support techs. The fix required some extensive editing of the
registry. Yesterday my Publisher 2003 was not functioning correctly so I
tried repairing it. It still doen's work and now the updated is not working.
Aborts at 50% during the scan. I am now waiting for the instructions on the
registry edit. In addition, whenever I open an office product the installer
tries to run.

The last time this happened removing office and reinstalling was one of the
fixes that MS support suggested. It did not work, nor did the steps sin the
KB article. Suggest you email a request for free support from a MS support
tech. If I get my reply soon I will post the techs contact information.

So I used the windows installer cleanup utility which
uninstalled MS Office. Then I reinstalled Office figuring
that should fix the problem. Nope!

Now what? I just went to use the update feature and I got
the same damn message. At least the "Detect & Repair"
utility is working again.

Argh....
Cany anyone here from Microsoft lend a hand? I'm usually
pretty good at this stuff, but this is getting ridiculous.

Thanks,
Larry

Larry--

I don't know how to fix the scanner. It's a very common complaint. But I
do now *where to get your updates and bypass the scanner.* This site will
list all available and there aren't ever that many for Office that figuring
out what you have and don't is a problem. I wonder if you have an OS onto
which you can install Windows XP SP2 RTM if the MSI 3.0 with it will fix
this.

I don't know if this would help you. I know it doesn't help a lot of people
use the scanner.

I have tried everything listed in Microsoft Knowledge base
article 304498 to no avail.
I have also run the Windows Installer cleanup utility,
which removed Office, which I then re-installed. I thought
surely this would fix the problem but it did not.

I tried to manually download SP3 and got the following
error when attempting to install it:

Office Hotfix Installer
Action: 0HotfixDetectionNPUerr
ErrNum: 1612 Err0 :{DA256408-A2E7-41A5-8Ad6-62ACB86AOFD7}

Someone else may have a fix for the scanner Larry. Sloan Crayton may, but
in the meantime, why not just go over to the "taskpane" on the left on the
Office website, click downloads, and select the Office version you want the
download for, and pick from the small list of updates available for the
components of Office XP--or use the link.

I appreciate you've been trying to fix the problem. You could try
Help>Detect and Repair, but I really doubt that's going to impact this.
