Office update should not require the original CD. No one carries .

I have just tried to use the Microsoft Update site to update my Office
software and could not complete the process because the update site required
that I insert the original Office Installation CD. I do not have this CD.
Office was installed by Dell when I purchased the laptop. I do not recall
receiving the Office CD with my laptop. Now I can't update my Office software
to protect my laptop for hackers. I am very disappointed with Microsoft over
this issue. ALL OF MY SOFTWARE IS LEGAL AND FULLY PAID FOR and still I remain
vunerable to hackers because of Microsoft's update policy and Microsoft's
inability to design safe and secure software.

Paul,

Thank-you for your reply, however you miss the point of my comment. I'm sure
that Dell did in fact include the Office installation CD with my computer,
however as Office was already pre-installed I did not need to use the CD and
stuck it ( and all the other documents and CD's) into a box for storage. Now
12 months and 2 moves later I have no idea where this box is and can NOT
update my Microsoft Office software. Your initial comment to blame Dell for
the problem is typical of Microsoft's attitude toward customer service. The
issue remains, that a very large number of legal Microsoft Office users
(Microsoft customers) will not be able to upgrade their Office software
because they can not find (lost or misplaced) their original Office
installation CD thus keeping their systems exposed to hackers. That is not in
the best interests of anyone.

I don't miss your point. I don't like having to pull out my CD for updates
either, so I left the installation files on my HDD since I have available
space. You can send Microsoft a suggestion at the following link

You failed to mention you misplaced the disk or lost the disk in your
initial response but you still need to contact Dell for replacement media
since the software was preinstalled. I don't work for Microsoft I just
volunteer my time as do other MVP's to help others.

It is a customers responsibility to keep up with the CD media.

I just received a call from a client in a similar, but worse, situation.
She cannot find her Office Disk, she's been looking for two days. She tried
updating her Office installation, and now whenever she tries to open Word or
Excel, it won't let her in at all. It prompts her for the disk and closes
out when she doesn't provide it.

AMEN!!! AMEN!!! I have the CD's, keep them in my office, and find myself
updating at the most inopportune times. This is a MAJOR failing on MS's
part.
