Office Update UN-Stuck

Ah, the magic key to becoming UNstuck!

Read 9/19/03 item by (e-mail address removed) that recommended
altering a setting on a Norton internet security package.
Specifically, he said "head to the advanced options, active
content and enable 'allow all scripts to execute.'"

Since I normally run ZoneAlarm Pro as my firewall, I shut
it down. Tried to get Office Update scan to work. At
first it was still stuck at 30%. I clicked REFRESH
button, and voila! the scan proceeded to completion.
Then, I restarted my firewall. I don't yet know what
specific ZoneAlarm Pro setting needs to change, but at
least I can scan for Office updates again!

BTW, when I restarted the firewall again, Office Update
scan was again stuck. So this seems to be the fix for me.

All these tools we use to keep our PCs safe are getting in
the way of normal business!

Hi John,

In Internet Explorer if you go to
Tools=>Internet Options=>General=>[Settings]=>View Objects]
and delete the 'OfficeUpdate Installation Engine (27Aug2003)
then revisit http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate
and check for updates does the control reinstall?

Sometimes the 'extra features' in ZoneAlarmPro rather
than 'ZoneAlarm Free edition' can make troubleshooting
it a bit more of an issue :) I had a similar issue
with ZoneAlarmPro, that a couple of my email apps/utilities
would work on the 2nd try, but not on the first, or would
work if ZoneAlarm pro was started manually but autostarted
with Windows.

In the ZoneAlarm Pro module list for Internet Explorer
what items are listed and which are allowed to access
the internet?

In Programs what MS apps and utilities are double green
checked and what other MS items are listed but not
double greened?
