Hi,

Until quite recently, I had problems updating office xp.
Update meter stops at 40% and then error msg appears
saying that there is a problem updating this machine.
Previously, there was no problem.
Can someone please help?

HI;

The same is happening to me, this has been happening now
for the last couple of weeks which it hangs at 40% then
gets the following error message.

Error! Unable to check for updates on this computer Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on
this computer. This may be happening because of one of
the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this
computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used
by the Office Update site failed to download. Go back to
the Downloads home page and try running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from
previously applied Office updates are missing from the
\Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP
files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing
you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result
of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product
Support for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then
upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows
Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB
article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source
if Unavailable.

I am running XP pro, with addmin rights so don't know
what is wrong, if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks;

Mike

Having exactly the same problem! Sent a request for help
to Online Tech Support. From the number of users that are
having this problem you would hope that MSFT would come up
with a 'cure', today rather than tomorrow.

Hi Mike,

What edition of MS Office are you using?

Was it installed from and updated through
an Office Admin point?

Are you using a firewall product?

Are you using a 3rd party download accelerator utility?

If you close Office and your browser then
-clear the cache in your browser;
-delete the contents of the folder
\Program Files\OfficeUpdate11\
and
-cleanup the files in the folder you find by
typing %TEMP% in Start=>Run

does revisiting http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate
work?

If not, can you successfully complete a detect & repair
or repair reinstall of MS Office?

Me too. I check for updates daily and reckon this all
started when MS changed the look of their update pages.
My WIndows Update is still working ok. Nothing else has
changed. I do use a firewall but have tried downloading
with it turned off. I have tried to make microsoft a
trusted site but no joy.

Hi Eileen,

Some folks have had success in disabling
- a program called Adshield

- Changing the setting in Norton security or other
firewall product or browser to allow scripts to run

If not -

What edition of MS Office are you using?

Are you using a firewall product?

Are you using a 3rd party download accelerator utility?

Hi Bob;

I am running MS Office XP Pro with SP2

It was installed from the CD's I have in my profile which
has Admin rights

I do have a firewall, and a router, & I have tried
updating with it turn off but still get same problem.

I don't use a 3rd partty download accelerator utility.

I followed all your instruction you gave, and still
getting the same problem????

Tried Detect & Repair, but get this Message "This patch
package could not be open. Verify that the patch package
exist and that you can access it, or contact the
application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows
Installer patch package."

I even tried to reinstall it over it, but with same
problems, but I haven't tried to uninstall it the try to
reinstall..

Thanks Mike
