office updates error? and can't repair?

Michael E

Hi,

Just done a Microsoft update and installed all updates for Windows XP
successfully.

However, none of the Office updates will install and I get the following
errors:
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB917149)
Security Update for Word 2003 (KB917334)
Security Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB916518)

I've tried numerous times to update but get the same error. I also tried to
repair Office (choosing option to reinstall and option to detect and repair
errors under repair option), but I get the following message:
'Installation ended prematureley because of an error'

I click ok, then get the following message:
'Fatal error during installation'

I use Windows XP Home, Microsoft Office Proffessional Edition 2003.

Any help is appreciated thank you,
Mike

Sorry I didn't add error codes. They are as follows:

Outlook = Error Code: 0x80070643
Word = Error Code: 0x80070643
PowerPoint = Error Code: 0x80070643

Thanks again for any reply,
Mike

I'm seeking a solution for these same problems where installation of the same
updates for Office 2003 fails. I found 884298 "You cannot install an Office
2003 service pack" but following the recommended procedure in 832672 to
identify the product code GUIDs for my Office 2003 configuration yields an
Office SKU of 30x which is not in the published list of SKUs for Office 2003.
The key names are
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{90170409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}; (this is FrontPage 2003)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{90240409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}; (this is Office 2003 Resource Kit) and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{90300409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}
(this supposedly indicates Office XP media content according to 302663).
Because this Office 2003 copy is an upgrade from Office XP I'm reluctant to
follow the rest of the steps advised by 884298 to re-create the path of the
original installation source in the registry.

Following the procedure in 884290 "How to troubleshoot an update
installation by using log files in Office 2003" in OU(00001)_Msi.log there
are first find several hundred repeats of strings similar but not identical
to the following: "DEBUG: Error 2746: Transform 1TTo1U invalid for package
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\70ec7c.msi. Expected product
{901C0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}, found product
{91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}.
1: 2746 2: 1TTo1U 3: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\70ec7c.msi 4:
{901C0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9} 5:
{91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}" and then towards the end of the log,
the string "StartCache: Error 0x80070002: failed to get download:
90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9
Action ended 13:30:03: StartCache. Return value 3" appears.

Searching the newsgroups, of note, I too (sob! sob! sob! sob! AhAhAhAhAh
Darn it) have run Microsoft Live Safety Center Registry Cleaner on this
system but believe me have learned my lesson there, especially since
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Windows Live Safety
Center\Backup\*.reg doesn't exist. I have also read some interesting posts
about don't run registry scanners/cleaners because they tend to create these
kinds of problems. However I did run Norton WinDoctor's registry check just
to see if it would find any problems due to Live Safety Center's Registry
Cleaner or other stuff but Norton's came back reporting no problems found.

Really really looking for a way to avoid taking all of Office 2003, Project
2003, Visio 2003, FrontPage 2002, etc. off this system and reinstalling them
-- that's a big job. Not to mention finding the KB article on how to save
Outlook files and so forth.

Of course, all Office 2003 updates have been working A-OK until now. These
install failures started with the 29 May 2006 Outlook Junk Mail update 916521.

Yes I have run Windows genuine validation etc. on this system and it all
validates OK.

What's with all of this?

Clearly something major has changed.

Help!

Any suggestions, advice, admonitions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I should have also mentioned that I ran Office 2003 detect and repair but
that also failed.

One more note: I do have a full copy of Office 2003 Professional I'm not
currently using that I could install on this system under de-installing all
of the rest of it.

My past three registry backups are 17 June 2006, 01 May 2006, and 07 April
2006. However I'd like to avoid going as far back as 01 May as a lot changes
each month.

I have the exact same problem. My installations were from MSDN cds.
Messages like this in the officeupdate log:

DEBUG: Error 2746: Transform 8TTo8U invalid for package
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\a2a230.msi. Expected product
{90180409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}, found product
{91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}.
1: 2746 2: 8TTo8U 3: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\a2a230.msi 4:
{90180409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9} 5:
{91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}

The weird thing is, the found and expected products seem to be exactlyb
the same???

I have had the same installation problems with Office 2003. Tried what was
suggested: set OSE to manual, copy OSE from disc to hard drive. What worked
was uninstalling and reinstalling Office. Worked like a charm.

Michael,

Had the exact same problem using auto update. Tried to manual install and
error message was more descriptive. Advised I needed the installation CD.
Put your original installation CD in and you shouldn't have a problem!

Hi,
I just have got in the same problem,
updates to Word Viever 2003 KB934041,
and Office 2003 KB920813, KB934180, KB919029, KB919029, KB924424
fail, log file information says:
"DEBUG: Error 2746: Transform 1TTo1U invalid for package
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\e50f1c.msi. Expected product
{90240409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}, found product
{90850409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}."
I am not sure it is caused using register cleaner (EasyCleaner in my
case); in any case I was not able to find string "90240409" in the undo
files.

So I attempted to uninstall the WordViever and install it again (then I
did Windows reload), and after it the updates worked; and not only the
WordViewer update but all the office updates too!

May be this experience you hepls.

Hi Eric,
the errors I have got when I was trying to update MS Office 2003 were
in czech language, I enclose them. The
"UpgradeOfficeProblem0708041259.PNG" is a pop-up windows saying: "Some
of upgrades cannot be installed";
"UpgradeOfficeProblem0708041359.png" is a pop-up windows "Error
details".
"UpgradeOfficeProblem0708041349.png" is a final screen from the
"Windows update tool" from MSIE: "Installation results".
I hope this will help you.
Regards
Frantisek Opravil
