Office updates no longer working

For some time now when Windows automatic updates runs it will fail on any
updates to my Office Pro 2003 applications. I didn't notice at the time when
it began, and yet sufficient time has passed that I'm writing to see if
anyone has suggestions. I've ensured that the appropriate keys exist in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Delivery\SourceEngine\Downloads
for my dvd-rom drive, and have tried keeping my install dvd in the drive
during the update (per kb id 884298).

No news of any particular note is presented other than "Installation
Unsuccessful" or "The update cannot be applied."

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated,

ps: And yes, uninstalling and reinstalling have occured to me, but I'm
hoping that's a last recourse.

You cannot install an Office 2003 service pack

When you try to install a Microsoft Office 2003 service pack from the Microsoft
Office Update Web site or the Microsoft Download Center, you receive an error
message. Additionally, you cannot install the Office 2003 service pack.
When you try to install an Office 2003 service pack from the Microsoft Office Update
Web site, you receive the following error message:
Installation Unsuccessful
When you try to install an Office 2003 service pack from the Microsoft Download
Center, you receive the following error message:
The update cannot be applied.
