Office updates not responding

From inside Word 2003 I go to the office web site. Attmept to check for
updates, get screen that says Please wait, checking for Office updates. See
progress bar wtih 40 % completed, system freezes. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and see
message Not Responding.
