Our company has approximately 40 laptops that deployed across the country.
We need to support each of these machines and make sure that all security
updates are applied. We have installed ZENWorks for Desktops one each of the
laptops and will be managing the small updates via ZENWorks (service packs
could be done this way as well but the size and time constraints over dialup
make this option less desirable).
Another issue we have with Office updates is that they generally require the
Office XP CD to complete the install. Each user is licensed for Office XP
via our company license (open/volume license) however none of the users has
an Office XP CD. We only have 3 copies of the Office media and these are
kept at the corporate office. My initial idea to get around this requirement
would be to copy our Office CD and distribute it to our field staff (without
giving them the product key). Although I'm not sure of the licensing issues
with this idea.
However we still need to resolve how to deploy the Office service packs and
make sure they're getting run on these machines. At this point I see I've
got two options: 1)deploy the service packs via ZENWorks or 2)require the
user to visit the Office Updates website and have them update their
machines. Either option over dialup presents a problem with time required to
complete the download.
How have people handled these situations? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
