Office updates should warn that installation requires the Office C

M

I had my CD-ROM drive disconnected when I was trying to install the latest
round of updates to Office 2000 from the Office Update service. I was
dismayed (though, in hindsight, not surprised) to find out that the updates
would not successfully install because I couldn't supply the Office CD when
prompted. I thought, "well, OK, I'll just do the updates some other time."
But then, when I tried to launch Office applications, they, too, were
prompting me for the Office CD to complete their installation -- So the
incomplete updates left my Office installation in an unusable state!

Once I hooked up my CD-ROM drive, I was able to go back to the Office Update
site and install the updates, inserting the CD when prompted and all was
well; Office worked OK. But it was really annoying. I would have liked to
have known in advance that installation of the updates would require me to
insert the Office CD; I would've waited until I was in a position to do that,
had I known about it.

I'm also wondering why it is even necessary to insert the CD..?
