Office V X after Office 2004

My home recently burned to the ground and I lost all computers and
software. Microsoft graciously replaced Office for me, and I received
version X. Well, I just bought a new I mac that came loaded with
"Office 2004 Test Drive". I removed 2004, and installed X, but cannot
get the .doc extension associated with the older version! When right
clicking on a document and choosing "Get Info", the newer version
remains default, and I am unable to change it to an older version of
Word, even though it shows up in the list. If I choose another
application such as Apple's "Pages" - no problem, .doc extension files
launch in "Pages" without a problem. I change back to Microsoft Word
(10.1.1) and it doesn't stick, 11.2 tries to launch, doesn't exist, and
I get an error message! I can still drag files over the icon to launch
them, but would sure love to be able to just double-click on one again.
Does anyone know why this is happening! I'd sure appreciate the help!

Sorry to hear about your tragedy.

When you say "removed 2004" you must have just deleted it. You need to run
the installer and select "uninstall" which will remove it completely, along
with any of its vestigial hooks.

Haven't a clue why...some guesses:

How did you remove 2004? If you just dragged the app folder to the Trash,
that doesn't do it--there's an Office Remover that needs to be run.

Office X is at 10.1.6, so 10.1.1 is pretty far back. That may have something
to do with it. Try updating.

Also repair permissions, the general first troubleshooting step whenever
anything in the system goes wrong.

In addition to running the Remove Office utitlity (name inexact), you'll
also need to empty the trash after the utility finishes.

Thanks for the help everyone, I ran uninstall, but hadn't deleted trash
- that did the trick!
