Office v.X in French

I have Microsoft Office v.X for Mac, but I frequently do
work in the french language. Does any1 know a way to
change the spell checker in Word to the French language?

First you need to install the French-language spelling tools from the
Office CD using the "Value Pack" installer.

Then you need to reapply all Office updates, because some of them
update the French files as well.

Once that is done, now when you go to the "Tools" menu, you can use
the "Language" command to assign a specific language to the selection.
You can also define the default language for all documents (which can
still contain words in another language, as long as you apply that
other language setting to them).

I personally have different templates for English and French
documents, and then I have character styles in each template for words
in the other language (quotations, book titles, etc.).

in Spanish by someone working right here in Morristown, NJ. All the
special grammatical characters are coming in remapped and completely
wrong. I have registered tm marks ("circle R"), "TM" marks, cents
signs and infinity signs, among other characters. There are thousands
of them. How do I get them to come in as correct characters?

Is it possible she keyboarded using a Spanish keyboard layout?

Is there any way to convert to USA keyboard equivalents of those
alternate characters?

I'm not so worried about spelling right now, the way the other person
you relied to was.

Your help will be very much appreciated.

The keyboard layout doesn't make any difference as far as the document
is concerned. This is dealt with by the system that simply need to know
where the keys are located on your keybord to parse the information to
the applications as you type.
Once it is in the app, it's there as text, no matter what keyboiard
layout has been used.

In this very specific case, the problem is probably elsewhere. Do you
know what version of Word has been used to generate the file ??? Could
it be Word for Windows ???
