Office v.X Toolbar Requires Refreshing

On my Office v.X (Word) toolbars (like "Standard" toolbar)
loses all buttons if you switch applications. The buttons
will only return after doing a mouse "rollover" or
resetting the toolbar.

I have to follow a long upgrade path from a Classic
install, so I hope I don't have to reload just to
troubleshoot. Any ideas on the cause?

My v.X has the current updates.

I saw this a long time ago, but probably not in the last 12-18 months.
What OS version are you using?

If the buttons work, but don't display, my guess is that it's a driver
problem, not a Word problem, especially if you've updated to 10.1.4 or
10.1.5.

I am using OS 10.3.3; my Office is updated from "Office
for Macintosh" until Office v.X 10.1.5. It is installed on
a 17" Powerbook (1ghz).

Not relevant to your actual question, but I'm pretty sure you don't need to
install anything in Classic to reinstall. Just start installing Office X,
and when it says "can't find previous version," put the Classic CD in the
drive and point the installer to the CD.

Below are the general troubleshooting tips, though if JE McGimpsey says
display driver, he's the expert. I've heard that Word being so complex puts
more on a load on displays than other programs, and that it's not uncommon
for issues to show up only in Word.

See here to make sure you are fully updated:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/vxversions.html

Then check for general troubleshooting tips:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/word/troubleshooting.html
In addition to the tips listed there, check your Word Startup Folder (Apps:
Office: Office: Startup) and see whether you have any add-ins that may be
conflicting with Word (Endnote is a common culprit).

Please post back and let the newsgroup know what worked, or if you are
posting back because nothing worked, be sure to explain what you already
tried.

This link has a bit more information if you get desperate, but is presented
in a less straightforward manner.

I'm far from expert on device drivers, however. My suggestion came from
the fact that my redrawing problems disappeared sometime after
installing a Jaguar update. Could it have been coincidence? Possibly,
but I also did a search of the archives and found that there have been
almost none of these questions for a while now. Again, that leads me to
believe that updating, both Office and the OS may solve the problem.

I'm a bit less happy tonight. I removed Office, deleted the prefs, and
reinstalled Office from the v.X upgrade disk. Office requested my original
Office '98 just as D. Mitchell noted.

I always get an error message just as the MS 10.1.2 combined update nears
completion. The error number always changes but the message reads, "An
unexpected error accurred while installing "247980." 1008:17,-4"

Fortunately I have a PC with Word but I'll have to admit this is putting me off
from the nearly $400 USD for an upgrade.

Thank-you both for trying to help.

So none of the troubleshooting suggestions solved the toolbar problem? Did
you try them all before going to remove and reinstall?

And since you are already there, you do know that for a reinstall to fix
anything, you have to run the actual Office Remover to uninstall first? You
shouldn't have been able to delete the prefs *after* removing Office, as it
seems you did...

Dayo & JE M:

Day late on the uninstaller. I ran the installer and
looked for an uninstaller (like most Mac apps) and didn't
find one. So I followed the log from an install to pull
everything.

Because I'm in "production" I couldn't spend more hours
troubleshooting and find the "right" answer; sorry. I
resorted to dragging a back-up from 10.2.8, running the
only patch since that back-up (10.1.5), and <crossed
fingers> have been productive all night.

I didn't like my solution but it worked and saved several
production hours. Thanks, both of you, for all your help.
I'm keeping Dayo's troubleshooting tips in my Office
folder!
