Office very slow opening docs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

Upgraded to Office 2007 and everytime i open a document it takes forever
sometimes 2 to 3 minutes. This happen when opening attactment form my email
or docs that are saved on the local computer. Very frustating and time
consuming. Now if you leave the program open let's say excel and then open a
document it opens i quickly. If the program is not open it can as long 3 mins
sometime to open a document that 100kb. I have already adjusted the
anti-virus programand nothing. i have gone crazy searching the net for answer
and nothing. Can some please help!!!

I have the same problem and Bob I just helped me to solve it. Look at my
post just a few posts after yours.

"If you open My Computer, do you have "Disconnected" drives? If so
R-click on them and select "Disconnect", that should clear up the
problem. If there are not disconnected drives then there is some other
issue, perhaps network related."

Unfortunately, I am having the same problem. However we're on Office
2003. It's slow to open Word and Excel unless I already have the
application open. I've seen other issues that refer to slowness on a
network drive, but this happens for local documents also and does not
happen when trying to close or print as I've seen in other searches.
Will let you know if we find a solution.

Dis you find a solution. I am having the same problem with Microsoft 2003.

From an earlier posting of mine

If the problem is ONLY when you double-click on a file to open it. the
problem is likely due to DDE. It can be fixed by reinstalling, OR this
workaround.

Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types, scroll down to and
select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Excel files), click Advanced,
select Open entry, click the edit Button.
Now uncheck "Use DDE" and then put your cursor in the Application box,
arrow all the way to the right and put in "%1" (include the quote
marks), IF there is /dde remove it. Then OK you way out. Things should
work quickly again.

It's fixed! Same resolution as mentioned by Bob I.

1.) Open My Computer.
2.) Go to Tools -> Folder Options, and click on File Types.
3.) Find the extension of the file in question (XLS, DOC, etc.)
4.) Highlight the extension, and click \"Advanced.\"
5.) Highlight the \"Open\" Action, and click \"Edit.\"
6.) Click into the \"Application used...\" field, and scroll to the end
of the command.
7.) Put a space at the end, and type in \"%1\" (With the quotes.)
8.) Uncheck \"Use DDE.\"
9.) Click \"OK.\"

What ramifications could turning this off have? I don't have any experience
with DDE and am unsure of what uses it.

I haven't had any issues arising from it, and it was "adopted" from a MS
KB article for Office 2000. The other option as pointed out is to remove
and reinstall the Office suite, as I've found that a "Detect and
Repair" doesn't correct the issue.

I tried this, but the Apply button is greyed out, so each time I go back and
check, the DDE box has been rechecked. The added text stays, but now Word
cannot open a doc that is an email attachment. I have to save it to disk,
then Word can open it. Any ideas?

Perhaps there is something else wrong with your setup? You are picking
up on an old thread that dealt with a specific problem. Please try
running "Detect and Repair" in Word Help. If that doesn't correct the
issue, start a new thread giving particulars about the issues you are
having. I would include listing operating system, Office version and any
Service Packs installed.

How do you reinstall DDE?

We have the same problem in our company that is on one of the OS builds
we image onto our new laptops. The workaround works, but DDE also
appears to effect other things such as Windows Explorer. When opening
explorer using windows key and "E" it will take a long time to open on
the problem laptops.

We need to make sure that this is corrected on the new build.
