Office Word for Mac

I am unable to open a Word file (or Excel file) directly from the file
directories. This is new, before I had no problem. Now I must open
Word (or Excel) program and then use the open file command. I am
convinced there must be a preference tab that will correct this, but I
can't find it. Can you help?
