Office X 10.1.4 update & Normal template; heading 5 missing

David Kohn

Since I ran the Office X 10.1.4 update, when I open a new Word document, it
opens in standard view with the first paragraph formatted as a numbered
list.

Formerly it opened in in Layout view with the text formatted as normal text.

I know this has something to do with the normal.dot template, but am
uncertain how to fix it.

Also, in my normal template, the style that show include heading 1, 2, 3, 4,
6, 7, etc. For some reason there is no "heading 5" style. If I try to
create one, however, I get a message saying that is a reserved name (or
something to that effect). Where do I find this heading 5 style so I can
move it into the default style which open in my normal template?

Hi David,

Try testing your Normal template:

Quit Word and navigate to your Normal template which should be in
/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Templates/. Rename Normal to something else
(like OldNormal), then relaunch Word. If this fixes the problem but you
have customizations, etc, in OldNormal that you want to maintain, you can
use Organizer to transfer those from OldNormal to the newly-created Normal
template. Then you can trash the old renamed file. To learn how to use
Organizer, see here:

If this doesn't fix the problem, quit Word again, trash the new Normal and
rename OldNormal back to Normal.

Have you tried going to Format->Style, and making sure that the window under
the list of styles says "all styles" instead of "styles in use"? When you do
that, you should get all of the "reserved" styles - then you can click on
Heading 5 and modify it if you want and then click on "apply" and it'll now
be a "style in use" which will show up on the drop down styles menu.
