If I try to start any office or Explorer on my Mac they just bounce in
the dock and do not start. I am running OSX 10.2.8. Why is this
happening? Can anyone help me???

Thanks

How do you do this? From my readings it seems this might be the cause
of my problems. Thanks

Hello I did know of this article, but it doesn't exactly reflect my
problem as I am using OSX 10.2.8, not 10.1.1 and I can't find the
personal settings the article refers to. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try switching to a new User in System Preferences. Now try to Open one of
the Office applications. If it launches then you know you have problems in
your User's folder.

Other options would be to use "Remove Office" then install from the CD and
update. If that does not work then your system if probably at fault. You can
use an archive and restore for the OS. This should fix the problem.

This problem has been with me for several weeks.
I have tried all the option published by Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 312209 and am now lost. How do I "Remove Office"?
Reinstalling (without removing) doesn't help at all.
How do I use an archive and restore for the OS? I have reinstalled
(without uninstalling) my system 10.2 and then updated. I have
10.2.8. Many thanks.
ps. Office flags up, looks good, then without opening any documents
says "The application Microsoft Word (or excel etc) has unexpectedly
quit. The system and other applications have not been affected."

You might not have to re-install. Begin by downloading and installing the
latest Office X updates, which are 10.1.2, 10.1.4, and 10.1.5 (10.1.3 is
unnecessary). They¹re available from Microsoft.
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#OfficeX>

Run Disk First Aid. Instructions on how to run it in OS X are located on
the Apple Knowledge Base.
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214>

Try repairing permissions.
For OS 10.2/10.3:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

Now try removing and re-installing Office X. Insert the Office X CD, then
open the Value Pack. Click the Value Pack Installer. Check "Remove
Office", then click "Continue". Run the "Remove Office" utility. When
done, re-install Office X from the CD.

And, if you're still stuck, the problem might be happening because you have
duplicate or corrupt fonts. You can use a utility like Apple Font Book
<http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/fontbook/> to enable/disable fonts for
testing.

Extensis Suitcase <http://www.extensis.com/suitcase/index.html?ref=hp> even
claims to be able to detect corrupt and duplicate fonts; you might want to
download the free trial and see if that'll help you fix the problem.

I have a similar problem, reported to MS developers today. (See description below.

I have Mac OSX, v.10.3.2 and the latest updates of all OfficeX apps

Besides using the old Mac (pre-OSX) extension conflict methods, I have run Disk Utility to repair permission and run the standard UNIX utilities to clean house and verify all low-level processes

I hope this gets resolved.

Thank you MS support and fellow users

Dear Microsoft

This may be a bug report

I am using Mac OSX, 10-.3.2 (Panther). There is a feature called Start-up Items, with which I am very familiar and experienced (as I’m sure you are). I have 6 apps set as Start-up Items to fire up each day and be there ready to run when I sit down with my morning coffee

But, I CANNOT get BOTH Word and Excel to launch successfully as start-up apps. One will start just fine, while the other hangs at the app’s splash screen. The behavior is somewhat inconsistent, but it is usually Excel that hangs and fails to launch completely.

After this sequence (launch failure, and Force Quit of the frozen app), I can always go back and launch the app in the normal (unautomated) way

I have tried all the usual tricks used in resolving extension conflicts -- I know this is not appropriate in OSX, but it was worth a try: I’ve eliminated all other Start-up Items, changed the order, renamed startup items, tossed preferences for Word and Excel, reinstalled OfficeX, etc. No luck

I have also worked through all this with Apple Tech Support and we are unable to correct the problem

Is there any other info I can provide to help fix this?

Thank you
