Office X and home directory slowness on 1st login

Hello world. After a quick search of the group here, I do not see
anything that matches so here goes...

A friend is a new netadmin at a local school - xserves host user home
directories. Unfortunately, I am not there and do not have any further
specifics but here is the question.

When my friend installs Office X on a machine, reboots and then logs in
to it, it takes a long time for Office apps to start (10 min+). Logout,
login again, Word starts in 3 seconds.

He logs into ANOTHER machine which Office is installed on with the SAME
user account as before, launch time is 10 min+. Logs out, logs in again
on THIS machine, 3 seconds to start Word.

Goes back to ORIGINAL station, 10 min + again. Has anyone using Office
and network home directories run into this before?

My friend will forever be grateful - thanks!

I think it's because Office needs to rebuild the font cache (and perhaps
other settings files) when the application is launched on a different
computer. Because the font cache is machine-dependent, when the user has
the font cache set for the other machine, it needs to be rebuilt when the
user switches back. I don't know of any workaround.
