I have just updated to OS 10.4.8.
I have been running Office X, but only entourage opens now.
I have a couple of hundred of fonts loaded into fontbook.
Word and Excel appear to crash when "optimizing font menu".

Does anybody else have this problem, and how do I rectify this.

Many thanks.

Power Mac or Intel Mac?

Did you use the 10.4.8 Combo Updater or "Software Update"? - use the Combo.

Did you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after updating?

Is Office X fully updated (10.1.8)?

Thanks for getting back to me.

Power Mac G4
Purchased 10.4 as new
No, I haven't run Disk utility. Should I?
I don't think Office X is fully updated, and I can't find updates for
it.

N Problem - glad all is well, but as to Disk Utility the answer is a
definite *Yes* it should be used to repair disk permissions any timeyou
update the OS, update or install applications, as well as being one of the
first steps to take if you are experiencing any problems. There are other
utilities (such as Onyx) which provide the same type of routine, but Disk
Utility is included with OS X. You'll find it in the Applications:Utilities
folder.

BTW - if you got "hundreds of fonts", make sure they are all ok.
Crap fonts are one of the best methods to cause Mac OS X including
many applications to tumble. Font Book can verify them, in
serious cases, go for Font Doctor:

P.S.
Very handy to work with many fonts inside Word:
