Office X and Virtual PC

R

RobtotheK

I bought the standard edition of Office X through school. I
understand that Office X Professional comes with Virtual
PC. However, standard does not. Is there an upgrade option
from standard to professional that does not cost $230? Or
am I better off just purchasing Virtual PC standalone for
$130 (I already have 2 MS OS's that I will be running).

Thanks!

If you can afford to wait for a month or so, and you want to upgrade to
Office 2004 Professional you can get it for US$100 using MS's Technology
guarantee (and including Windows XP Pro):

Otherwise, purchasing the standalone VPC is probably your best option -
there's no "upgrade" from Standard to Pro - the only difference is the
addition of VPC.

Office X is now history. Office 2004 Professional will indeed come with
Virtual PC, but the Pro version has not been released because Virtual PC is
still under development to optimize it for the G5.

Unfortunately, if you buy the Standard version of Office 2004 (which is
shipping now) you would have to buy the full version of Virtual PC later,
when it comes out.

That's a bit of a stretch...

Office 2001 and Office v.X are still being sold by major retailers.

In addition, Office 2004 has some show-stopping bugs that prevent some
users from upgrading.

I've never seen any Microsoft software that doesn't have major bugs. :)
Many of those never get fixed either. :D

So far, Word 2004, Entourage 2004 and Excel 2004 don't appear any buggier
than previous versions. What should I be watching for? (PowerPoint I never
use, never have.)

In any event, retailers may well have leftover Office X overstock, but
Office X is off the Microsoft site. To me, that qualifies as "history".

At the main site <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/>, click "Other Products",
and you get here:

ucts>

which leads off with Office v. X, or

The same online and offline retailers that sell 2004 will sell you v. X.
Although I'd agree that there wouldn't be much point in anyone buying X as a
first time purchase now that 2004 is out.

Thanks, Paul. It's certainly buried deep in there. :)
