Office X Closing Word

We have been having problems with documents created in Microsoft Word (Office X) running on 10.3.9 (eMacs 800 Mhz 128MB) closing when some students click on either file and print or click on format and document. I haven't found a solution to stop Word from closing in these instances other than opening a new Word document and copying and pasting all of the content from the "closing Word document version" to the new blank document. I can then usually click on file and print or format and document and it will work. Has anyone else run across this? I am not sure how to fix this and prevent this issue from happening to students. We are thinking about upgrading to Office 2004 maybe next year or the year after, but we have to purchase more RAM in order to run Office 2004 and there is no way our eMacs can run Office 2008.

If copying fixes the problem, then it sounds like documents may be
corrupt, and with lots of documents, the Normal template that is used as
a basis to create a doc may have corrupted. See especially the links on
Document Corruption and Normal Template on this page, but consider all
the general troubleshooting information there.
