Office X Education - can I upgrade?

J

J.William Kay

Hi!

As a student, I purchased Office X for the Education price, and the
installation CD is labelled "Academic".

Now that Office 2004 is out, can I simply purchase the upgrade?
I seem to remember being told this was ok when I bought Office X, but can't
find it mentioned anywhere now.

All the best,
William.

No, Student and Teacher editions aren't upgradeable. That's the bad news.

The good news is that buying the Student and Teacher edition of Office
2004 is cheaper than purchasing the upgrade. As long as you still
qualify, that's the best way to go.

Note: If you purchased Office v.X after the Technology Guarantee date
(early January in the US), you can get a free upgrade, including the S&T
edition. See

According to my Standard Upgrade box of 2004 you can upgrade the Student and
Teacher Edition of v.X:

Upgrade eligibility: To be eligible for Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac
Standard Edition Upgrade, you must be a licensed user of one of the
following Microsoft products: Office 98 Macintosh Edition, Excel 98
Macintosh Edition, Excel 98, Powerpoint 98, or Word 98; Office 2001 for Mac,
Excel 2001, PowerPoint 2001, or Word 2001; Word 2001 + Entourage 2001
Special Edition; or Office v.X for Mac Standard, Professional, or Student
and Teacher Edition, Excel X, Word X, PowerPoint X, or Entoruage X.

I understand that MS offers other versions to academic institutions, and
these are not considered to be the regular Student and Teacher Edition
available off the shelves of regular stores. Usually they are dirt cheap
(sub $50).

My mistake - I was referring to the fact that there isn't an S&T
upgrade. You're right, MS has made upgrading to Office 2004 as easy as
possible.

Thanks for the information. I'm no longer eligible for student pricing, and
having to fork out for a new full version, rather than an upgrade, seemed a
bit steep! Glad I can get the upgrade.

All the best,
William.
