Office X under Panther won't save templates

I have tried either making a new template or modifying an old one, and as
soon as I choose "Save" from the File menu and click on "Template" for the
format, the little blue "Save" button at the bottom becomes gray and won't
allow a save. Also when I open a template from the template folder, the top
announces that it is a "read only" file. I installed Panther a few months back
on my G-4 and I am wondering if this is a Panther incompatibility issue.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Joan,
Does it refuse to save as a template even when location is set to My
Templates?
You could try going at it the other way round--from the Project Gallery,
open a new Blank doc but set it to *create* as a template, instead of saving
as a template after the fact.
When you open a template from the read-only folder, how are you opening it?
And what does Get Info say for permissions?
