office xp 2002 problem

When opening any office application, I get the following:

"windows installer preparing to install" and then it
states that the feature we are trying to install is on an
external cdrom and asks to insert the disk and say ok...

Why?

Did the installation get corrupted? I haven't been able
to locate my original Office XP disk..... What is the
solution?

The solution, unfortunately, is to find your CD.

Chuck,
I had this situation occur as well.
Install the service pack and all should be repaired.
But you really do need to find your CD.
