Office XP 2002 Professional to Office 2007

This question/issue is slightly more involved than the subject may lead you
to believe. I'm also new to these boards, so please bear with me. I apologize
in advance for the lengthy question and really appreciate anyone who can help
me.

1) Last year, I installed Office XP 2002 Professional w/Publisher on my
Desktop which runs on Windows XP 2002 Home Edition SP2. I ordered that Office
Suite from from RoyalDiscount.com for $211 and I believe that it is an OEM
product because, DUH, it says OEM product on the back of the CD sleeve. How
do I tell the difference between retail and OEM? I wasn't sure if the retail
versions also have that OEM product sticker on the sleeve. The answer to this
question may make my second question a non-issue.

2) I recently bought a laptop with Vista Home Basic Edition pre-installed.
Can I uninstall the Office XP Professional w/Publisher from my desktop, then
install it on my laptop, and then upgrade to Office 2007?

To upgrade to Office 2007 it is not necessary to have a previous Office edition installed. Simply "show" the installation the Office XP disk when requested, then remove the XP disk and continue installing.

So, I can leave XP Office on my desktop... fire up my laptop and download (or
insert upgrade CD) Office 2007... then when the installation process asks for
the XP CD, just put it in and take it out? It doesn't seem right, but I'll
give it a shot, probably first thing this coming week. Thank you for your
reply.

Hi Adam,

MS Office OEM editions are intended to be preinstalled on new PCs, rather than sold as standalone packages. OEM editions are
licensed to a specific machine and aren't generally transferable to a new one.

You can, however, purchase an 'upgrade' package of the Office 2007 suite of your choice (http://office.microsoft.com/suites) and
when installing it you can use the CD of the Office XP OEM edition when asked, as proof of eligibility to upgrade (without
installing the OEM edition on the new machine).
