Office XP and 2003 - MS Word Functionality query

P

Peter Wilkins

I'm running Office XP on my desktop with Word 2002 SP3 and Office 2003
on my laptop with Word 2003 SP1.

Word 2003 has a fantastic view option called "Reading Layout" that I
use all the time, particularly for reading ebooks.

Word 2002 doesn't have this option, and it is a pain reading ebooks as
it can't adjust the viewable text size the way 2003 can in the Reading
Layout view.

My query is twofold:

1. Can I upgrade the Word 2002 in Office XP to somehow include the
"Reading Layout" function of Word 2002? I've gone to the MS upgrade
site and got the latest SP3, but the functionality is still not there.

2. If I can't add that functionality to Word 2002, is it legal to
install my Office 2003 onto my desktop over (or in place of) my Office
XP installation? I wouldn't be using them both at the same time, but
I'm not sure if Microsoft would accept another activation for the same
Product ID. I have the installation CD's for both Office XP and
Office 2003 and I certainly don't want to buy a THIRD copy of Office!!

TIA for any advice.

Hi Peter,

I'm certainly a novice here, so I hope the experts come
on board and offer advice for you.

I discovered something today with my own issue I've been
trying to resolve.... it looks like if you go to your
Control Panel to Add/Remove Programs, you can uninstall
your Word 2002 version AS A CHANGE FEATURE, and then go
back in and install the Word 2003 (I think this might be
as a Change feature also).... check it out.

Meanwhile, I hope someone more knowledgeable than I in
both versions replies to you in a speedy manner!

Best wishes,
Joni

(Let me know if it works for you, OK.)

I managed to find what I needed after searching the MS KB and reading
the MS Office newsgroups. I got a reply from Bob Buckland saying it
was OK, but I wasn't happy until I found an official MS reference.

I found it is legal to install Office 2003 on my laptop and my
desktop, although I'm not supposed to use them at the same time.
it's all in the eula.

I just put my Office 2003 CD into my desktop, told it to update, and
away it went, telling me it was removing the existing installation.
When it finished it took me to the MS site for SP1 and installed that
too. It de-installed my Office XP installation OK, but unfortunately
removed Frontpage too - that was included in Office XP pro but is not
part of my Office 2003. Word 2003 took all my macros and setup from
the old installation OK.

Only installation problem I noted (so far) was that Outlook didn't
migrate my email account settings. Instead, it lists three
(identical) copies of my contacts instead! I can live with that to
get the reading view in Word 2003!
