Office XP and 2003 - MS Word Functionality query

P

Peter Wilkins

Sorry if this is a repeat - it didn't list in the newsgroup the first
time Iposted.

I'm running Office XP on my desktop with Word 2002 SP3 and Office 2003
on my laptop with Word 2003 SP1.

Word 2003 has a fantastic view option called "Reading Layout" that I
use all the time, particularly for reading ebooks.

Word 2002 doesn't have this option, and it is a pain reading ebooks as
it can't adjust the viewable text size the way 2003 can in the Reading
Layout view.

My query is twofold:

1. Can I upgrade the Word 2002 in Office XP to somehow include the
"Reading Layout" function of Word 2002? I've gone to the MS upgrade
site and got the latest SP3, but the functionality is still not there.

2. If I can't add that functionality to Word 2002, is it legal to
install my Office 2003 onto my desktop over (or in place of) my Office
XP installation? I wouldn't be using them both at the same time, but
I'm not sure if Microsoft would accept another activation for the same
Product ID. I have the installation CD's for both Office XP and
Office 2003 and I certainly don't want to buy a THIRD copy of Office!!

TIA for any advice.

Hi Peter,

Reading Layout is a feature new to Word2003, it's not
available in Word 2002.

If you purchased a retail copy of Word/Office 2003 then
the license allows you to install on one desktop and one
laptop. If it's an OEM copy (came with the PC) it's tied
to that PC.

Hi Peter,

Thanks Bob,
It's a retail copy that I bought at the same time as but not as an OEM
part of my laptop, so I will go ahead and put it on my desktop with a
clear conscience. I was reluctant to do it without advice as the
Office 2003 box says on the back ""The product is licensed as a single
product. It's component parts may not be separated for use on more
than one computer", while the handbook says "The Office 2003 edition
uses the product activation system which allows your copy of Office
2003 to be installed on only one computer"

Any words of wisdom on installing? Can I install over the Office XP
to keep all my settings or should I uninstall Office XP and clean
install Office 2003?
