Office XP and Windows 98 Icon problem

I'm having a problem with several computers in a lab. Windows 98SE with all
updates and Office XP have been installed. Intermittently the desktop icons
will not work. I've uninstalled fast indexing service. The computer is
otherwise functional via the start menu.
