Office XP - files not available

I just used the web to update my Office XP suite.
Now files are not available to Powerpoint and Word and
Excel.

So I uninstalled Office XP and reinstalled it.
It could read old files again.

So I installed Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Office XP.
It could read old files just fine.

So I installed Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Office XP.
I can not read the old files anymore.

So I uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled it, installed SP1
and I'm working just fine. Except, of course, I have none
of the benefits of SP2 and anything beyond it.

Anybody have a clue as to what is happening? I can't find
any help on the Knowledge Base.

Try downloading the update to your HDD and install it from there. Should
work better that way. There seem to be some problems with the normal update
runs.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't help. I
downloaded the update (SP2) and installed it from the hard
disk. After doing so none of the Office applications could
find existing office files. I'm deleting Office XP
completely and going to reinstall SP1.
