Office XP for students and teachers Installation Problem

Grateful thanks to anyone who can sort this out - it seems
to be a widespread problem (see, for example, an earlier
posting by "Speravi"): Running Windows XP and trying to
install Office XP for students and teachers I get the
message "Error opening installation log file. Verify that
the specified log file location exists and is writable."

No idea where to start, thanks in advance if you can
help...
