office xp freezes on attempt to browse

I have Word XP 2002 Professional on my laptop. When I try to open a file,
either by going to File>Open or by clicking on the open icon on the
toolbar, it comes up with the dialouge box but when I try to click on the
dropdown menu at the top to select a location, it crashes. Word freezes
up and stops working for about 30 sec. Then, it says Not Responding.
Later, it comes up and gives the send error report dialouge. I've tried
re-installing Word and that did not help. I've also done all of the
updates
for office. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks,

mike

It could be you have an invalid FTP site available in the list. In
order to remove it you'll need to do a little editing in the Registry.
Here is an article that contains the steps you need to use for an
invalid FTP site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q245325/

Note it is written for Office 2000 however it is still applicable to
Office XP but you will need to make a modification for Step 4. Use the
following instead:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Internet \FTP
