After installing office XP on my computer I cannot run any of the
office applications, I get a dialog box saying Please wait while
windows configures Microsoft Office XP Professional, and then the
application exits. This happens with all applications, including the
activation application. Here are the steps that have got me in this
situation.
I installed XP pro on my system, but chose not to activate it after my
wife decided she wanted it on her pc instead of mine. I uninstalled it
from my pc, then installed and activated it on hers. After a few weeks,
she decided she wanted Office 2003 so I bought her a copy. I
uninstalled Office XP from her system, then installed Office 2003 on
her system and activated it.
I then took the Office XP disks and installed them on my PC since I
removed the program from her PC. The installation program never
started. Instead I got a dialog box saying it was configuring my system
and gathering information. After about 30 seconds it said the
installation was complete, it never gave me any options as to what
applications I wanted installed. I checked my start menu and it had
installed all the applications on the CD. When I try to run them or
activate them I get the problem described in my first paragraph.
I have tried uninstalling, using the Windows Install Cleanup utility,
and deleting all references to office out of the registry. After all
that, I get the same installation behavior described above.
