Office XP installed now Word will only open in Safe Mode

Brand new PC with vista, downloaded all updates (including SP3).
Installed Office XP
small biz edition (chose not to install outlook but I installed
everything else - excel, word, publisher). Trouble is I fire up MS
Word and it just hangs on the splash screen. I can use it in Safe
Mode
but not in normal mode.

MS website no help.

I got a tip from the Vista NG about the NORMAL.DOT template and it
definitely seems to be the issue.

I renamed NORMAL.DOT to NORMAL.BACK and started word and it loaded
fine. When I closed word hwoever it regenerated a NORMAL.DOT and I
when I try to go back inot word again I get the same problem - Hang
(and can only enter in safe mode).

Have you installed a default printer and has it got the latest driver for
Vista?

Word won't work then. Install a printer and make it Windows Default.

If there is no printer installed, still install a printer driver. Select
"File" as the connection. Select one of the HP LaserJet models.

I installed a printer driver (canon mf3110 vista driver from the canon
website). Word still will not open in anything other than safe mode if
I have the Normal.dot template file.
