office XP not responding

When i try to open a file in excel or word (by going to
file, open ...)the winddows explorer box comes up, and i
click on c: to pull a file from my root directory, the pc
hangs up and sits there until i end task on word or excel
(whichever i am using) then i have to reopen office. i
have no problems if i go to the file and open it directly,
just wandering if anyone could help me on this anoying
problem.
