Office XP on old Dell XPS D300

I recently upgraded to Office XP on my Dells XPS D300 and
D333. The OS is Win 98. I also upgraded the Anti-virus to
Symantec Enterprise edition 8.1 client on this system.
Now, out of the blue, for some unexplained reason, both
systems, while sitting idle, have crashed with the black
screen and message in the upper left "No operating system
found" in one case, the error was preceded by the "error
reading (or writing, I cannot recall which) drive C:"
turning off the machine and turning it back on, it booted
up normally. I've surface scanned both systems with no
error coming up. Is there any known conflict with these
older systems and Symantec Antivirus 8.1 or Office XP? I
have other such systems in the office and I don't want to
lose them. Screen saver was running on both of them.
