Office XP Pro hangs after security updates

Downloaded the five updates sent by MS on 7-11. After installation, Office
XP Pro Word hung up on initial screen. Powerpoint opened but hung on opening
a file. Other apps the same. Would open in safe mode but hang on file open.
Uninstalled two updates - one for 07 Office system (KB936514) and one
security update for Excel 2002 (KB936513). Still hung. Uninstalled Office
XP Pro and in safe mode reinstalled the program. Still hung. Installed all
updates and after running detect and repai, got Word and others to open and
work OK. Upon restart, back to hung. Can't figure out a fix.

Hi, Alan. I suspect malware that is incompatible with the latest
updates. Are you running a proper firewall/antivirus/antispam
utility with proper real-time scanning for malware intrusion?

Do you connect to the internet through a proper hardware
firewall (router)?

If you don't have both the above items, you are probably infected.
This may be the source of your problem.

Also, if you do have firewall/antivirus/antispam/antimalware
software installed, insure the software is completely up-to-date.
It is quite common for the Microsoft Updates released on Patch
Tuesday to require companion updates to your antivirus/firewall
software. I always recommend bringing your antivirus/firewall
software completely up-to-date *before* running Windows Update.

Furthermore, when your applications hang, a report is made to
the Event Log with details on how the application hung. Sometimes
this gives valuable clues as to how to resolve the problem. Check
your Event Log with Event Viewer and see what it says in the Log
about application hangs.

I know you have posted the info that appears in the desktop dialog.
However, that is just Microsoft BS which is irrelevant to your
problem. It is the technical info that will provide the details that
may point towards a solution.

Best I can do for now. <tm>

Thank you for your response and questions. Your hypothesis of possible
malware is a sure possibility. I am running Norton 2007 Internet Security
suite. Did live update and then a complete scan - came up empty. Also
after backing up registry, ran Euising Registry Cleaner and then RegClean and
then the Registry Integrity and File Integrity fixer in CCleaner. Ran all
fixes and still have hangup.

Event Viewer Thanks for telling me to look there. Found many error logs-all
the times I tried opening office apps. Consistently got Fault Bucket numbers
associated with "Application hang" Numbers most often were 424287103. Also
found 431041983, 447061380, 260319318, and more. When I followed the link to
send to the microsoft help and support center - all messeage said "No use
action is required." The Related Knowledge Base article refered to "When you
visit a Web page that uses a custo opop-up object, Internet Explorer 6 closes
unexpectedly."
Doesn't seem relevant - plus I use IE7.

Other log events were "Haning application WINWORD.EXE version 10.0.6.829.0
hang module hung app version 0.0.0.0 hang address 0x00000000"
"Hanging application rrgui.exe version 3.0.37.0 faulting module mshtml.dll
version 7.0.6000.16481 fault address 0x00084c17" There were other similar
logs.

Following link on all of these types led to this ultimate message":
"Currently there are no Microsoft Knowledge Base articles available for this
specific error or event message. For information about other support options
you can use to find answers online, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx."

I'm still haning.
