Office XP Pro install over Office 2000 Pro

Operating system is Win XP Pro
Office XP Pro will not install because it can not find
the file Data1.MSI (I assume it needs this to uninstall
Office 2000).
Using Add/Remove Programs Office 2000 will not uninstall
for the same reason.
My Office 2000 CD1 is in the drive and I can see the
Data1.MSI file in explorer, but the installation program
insists that is not valid.
Eraser2000 will not run on Windows XP Pro
How do I get rid of Office 2000 so that I can install
Office XP???
