Office XP says it isn't installed ???

I'm using OfficeXP on Windows MCE 2005 SP2.

Two days ago, OfficeXP got the notion that it wasn't installed.
Whenever I tried to start a program, I got a beep and a message that
"this only works on products that are currentlly installed." WTH?

Can anybody explain this to me and tell me what to do about it?

Thank you.

Not on this machine. I copied my data and settings over to an
external hard drive and used Acronis True Image to make backups as
well. But I did not change anything on the computer itself. Then I
disconnected it (it's a laptop).

I then spent a couple of days getting my desktop computer back into
service, which involved reinstalling Windows and the updates. I
disconnected the desktop.

I reconnected the laptop and Outlook gave me that message.

Note: I've been having some glitches with this laptop in the last
couple of weeks, including no pagefile on 50% of my boots. Plus, when
I go into safe mode, it freezes at mup.sys. I've asked around and had
assistance from some very talented techs here and at aumha, but no
luck. Soon I shall do a restore to factory state (no separate disk
for windows).

In the meantime, this computer is the one I use for email, and I'd
like to have that feature working until I decide to wipe the disk.

PLUS -- I just found this in my TEMP folder:

offcln10.log

and the very first line says:

#### Audit Mode Log from Microsoft Office Removal Wizard ####

I'm not sure what that is; I'm not aware of starting any kind of a
removal wizard. Does anybody know what could have triggered it? I'd
like to avoid it in the future.

BTW, I reinstalled Office XP and my functionality is back, but my
settings and outlook rules are gone.

I appreciate your suggestion. Yes, I've gone back to several restore
points. I've restored an older registry that I made with Erunt. I've
prayed. I've been to AumHa forums and followed about a bazillion
suggestions. I've made a slipstreamed disk and tried to reinstall MCE
from that.

It's got to be something fixable, if only I could identify it. I
could spend a few more weeks fiddling with this, or just spend a day
and wipe the drive and start over. Thankfully, I've backed up
everything.
