Office XP Service Pack 1 not installing

I've tried to install the oxpsp1.exe and get the error
1328 applying patch to file C:\config.Msi\PT5050.TMP
Further stating that I probably don't need the patch.

Then I tried to install oxpsp2.exe and I can't because it
doesn't recognize what it needs for from the service pack
1.

Do I need these service pack critical updates????

Make sure that you are using a legal copy of Office XP. If you did not
purchase it from a store, or get it pre-installed on your new computer (with
an original CD), then you do not have a legal copy, and the updates will not
install.
