Office XP Service Pack 1 Upgrade Problem - Please Help!

M

Michael Potts

I get the following error whilst trying to upgrade to
service pack 1:

Error 1328: Error applying patch to file
C:\Config.Msi\PT768.tmp. It has probably been updated by
other means, and can no longer be modified by this
patch. For more information, contact your patch vendor.

It won't let me upgrade to service pack 1, and therefore,
I can't upgrade futher, ie: Service Pack 2, etc...

I recently had problems with applying SP-2. It kept saying I had to apply
SP-1 even though Office came with SP-1 built in. It turned out that one of
the stand-alone apps I added hadn't been updated. This blocked the SP-2 that
I had downloaded. It wouldn't accept SP-1, either. I went to the MS website
for office downloads and ran their automatic updater and it fixed the
problems, updating the stand-alones as needed. If you've been dealing
strictly with downloaded files, I recommend trying the autoupdate (although
I will download and keep the files as well).

Hi Moya,

FWIW, the http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates
site for SP1 works with copies of Office XP that MS
sold to the public. Generally, the 'fix' on the
site you mentioned is only needed with
copies of Office XP Professional plus Frontpage
that are not legitimate copies
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315152

It has nothing to do with wanting to be 'popular'.

you would think Microsoft would want to remain popular, yet they make
patches buggy as hell. Try this site:
