Office XP setting off system security

Even when Office XP is not running, it will set off my security system by trying to access the computer. I don't know what it is looking for and McAfee security will not accept the instruction to recognize the program. This will occur several times a session, usually 3 times in a row. Running Windows ME on an Athlon 1700.
