Office XP SP3 fails repeatedly to install

Over several weeks I have tried to install Office XP SP3 about a dozen times
including clean boot with NO firewall / AV (ZoneAlarm). Within less than a
minute, the system tray contains the icon with "your updates are ready to
install." SP3 does NOT appear as installed in the Control Panel Add/Remove
Programs listing. The Office Update web page says that I DO HAVE all the
latest updates installed on my computer. I'm tired of being nagged
incessantly to install SP3, and I would like the benefit of it. How do I
install it and make the popup reminder go away?
