office xp standard edition?

Hello, I purchased a notebook over a year ago. It has the
MS Windows XP Home Edition, ver.2002. It does not have
Word or Excel, (just notepad & wordpad) I need to
purchase these programs but cannot figure out which one
is best. I get such conflicting info. from salespeople
I am totally lost. Can anyone point me in the right
direction. Thank you for any help or info. SDM
